What can I help my mentee with?
  • managing stress and pressure
  • time management
  • building self-confidence
  • how to be mentally balanced with myself and what I do
About me
Studying at an international high school, at the University of Economics, and subsequently at Oxford gave Aldar excellent language skills and contacts with people from all over the world. The international environment is still key for him today. During his five-year career at the multinational company Honeywell, he worked his way up from an entry-level position as a commercial real estate analyst to a global management position, where he was responsible for comprehensive planning of new projects and building construction strategy around the world.

A year ago, Aldar moved his activities from the global arena to Prague, where he and his best friend founded their own small development and construction company. Together, they built the company from the ground up—creating a corporate identity, setting up internal processes, and hiring employees. Aldar is currently responsible for financial planning, management and procurement, HR, and coordination of marketing activities, which includes working with the sales team. He also participates directly in construction projects during inspection days. "The scope is enormous, and this is an advantage of small companies—you can try out much, much more than in large companies, where people are usually highly specialized."

Aldar is motivated to participate in mentoring by the opportunity to help students build their self-confidence. "There are many students who have potential, great abilities, and could achieve a lot, but often simply don't believe in themselves. For example, they don't believe they can apply to a prestigious university or get a certain job. It's all about psychology, and if I could ever help someone build self-confidence, it would be a huge personal success for me. This is the only way our society can move forward—when capable people believe in themselves so that they can fulfill their plans and dreams." In addition, Aldar always had several informal mentors around him—mostly older friends whom he looked up to. This was mainly because they managed to do a lot, such as studying at several schools or holding several jobs, while still having time for family, friends, and hobbies.

Role: Research group leader
Area: Biophysics
Employer: UCT Prague; former: Max Planck Institute, Reaserch centre Jülich, IOCB
Language: Czech, English
Mentees: Students, Employees
Form: Face to face, Online

What can I help my mentee with?
  • career planning, especially academic
  • studies, work, and life abroad
  • communication and presentation skills
About me
Michal is a theoretical chemist, scientist, university lecturer, and occasional organizer of social events at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague.
He grew up in a small town in Moravia. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the Faculty of Science of Charles University and studied chemistry, later specializing in theory and molecular modeling. He fondly remembers the years he spent at the Budeč dormitory. He obtained his doctorate while working at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, during which time he also completed several internships abroad. For example, he regularly spent the autumn months from 2009 to 2011 at the University of Pohang in South Korea, from where he returned to Europe by train. His solo travels across Asia offered him an exceptionally wide range of experiences.

After completing his doctorate and a short internship in France, he joined the Jülich Research Center in Germany as a scholarship holder of the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. This gave him access to what was then the most powerful supercomputer in Europe, which slightly influenced his future career. On the other hand, he experienced some disappointment in the academic world. He completed his second postdoctoral fellowship much more satisfactorily at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany. There, he began to study protein synthesis and ribosomes, which he continues to do today.

He returned to the Czech Republic in 2018 and founded his own group at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the University of Chemistry and Technology, which uses computer simulations to study large biomolecules. He is a member of the Czech Science Foundation panel and editor of the journal Communications Biology. In addition, he volunteers for the Czexpats in Science initiative, which brings together scientists with international experience. In his private life, Michal devotes himself to his three children, loves forests, coffee, the world of Harry Potter, and does not eat tomatoes.
As a mentor, he would like to share his experience, support mentees in their career steps, and help them step out of their comfort zone. He himself would like to broaden his horizons and expose himself to new ideas.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • how to cope with studying abroad
  • help choosing the right career path after graduation (start-up, science, industry)
  • time management and project management
  • learning how to meet the right people for your career
  • how to create synergy between diverse activities
About me

Adam is a scientist, (un)successful start-up entrepreneur, business developer, and founder of a Swiss non-profit organization. In his first year of studying analytical chemistry at Masaryk University, he began conducting research—using imaging mass spectrometry to measure heavy metals in tapeworms. During an internship in Germany, he focused more on biology and the analysis of neuropeptides in mouse brains using MALDI. His desire to explore the world took him to Switzerland for seven years, where he published ten scientific papers during his doctorate, learned to understand a different mentality, and realized his own self-worth.

"It's amazing how different we all are and how we all have different paths." However, it is not always easy to find and persevere on that path, and with his experience, he will be happy to help you find your path after graduation, whether it leads to a foreign university, a corporation, or your own start-up.

Form: Face to face, Online

What can I help my mentee with?
  • sharing experience from the industry and chemistry of compostable plastics
  • explaining the particle foam processing process
  • time management
  • work-life balance
About me

Luděk decided to pursue chemistry while still in elementary school, which is why he enrolled in a specialized chemical vocational school with a high school diploma at the then state-owned company SILON. After graduating from the University of Chemistry and Technology with a focus on polymers, he started working there. After two years, he moved to the large chemical company BASF, where he has been working for more than 25 years.  He started as a sales and technical representative for polyurethane foams in the Czech Republic. Gradually, he was given responsibility for other sales regions and products, and he is currently responsible for a large part of Europe.

His main job is to find new customers and take care of existing ones, with whom he also works on developing new applications. These are mainly orders for the automotive industry. First, it must be verified whether the part is even manufacturable, then the design and specific form are modified. "So you could say that we work together on the development of a new application and then collaborate on the production of a trial prototype series."

And why does Luděk want to get involved in mentoring? "Well, for one thing, I want to try something new, and for another, I miss the University of Chemistry and Technology, where I studied."

Her rich experience from studying and working abroad is now being followed by her PostDoc position at TU Berlin. Within her scientific work she is developing new catalyst materials which could, together with the energy from sunlight, be used to drive certain reactions for producing cleaner energy.

Edith has always been mentored throughout her scientific career path. “I can't imagine how difficult it would be to do it all by myself without any help or advice. I believe everybody is different and has a different approach, so the mentor is not there to teach you how to do things. He/she is there to share their own experience. Imagine, you are going somewhere, but you don't know what is ahead, because you have never been there. It is a great help if someone else, who has already been there, can share their experience so you have an idea what to expect and prepare for it.”

 Marek Šoltys

Marek Šoltys

Role: Project manager; project lead scientist - formulation
Area: Pharmaceutical industry
Employer:  Sandoz; formerly: Zentiva
Language: Czech, English
Mentees: Employees
Form: Online

What can I help my mentee with?
  • presentation skills and effective communication
  • orientation in the corporate environment and job search
  • insight into the functioning of the pharmaceutical industry
  • scientific positions in the pharmaceutical industry
  • CV writing, publication writing, moving abroad for work
  • communication with corporate and academic management at all levels
  • leadership and (de)motivation
  • horizontal management of people and teams (project work)
  • structured project management
  • crisis management and highlighting team successes
  • risk and opportunity analysis and risk/opportunity management
  • decision making (not only in projects)
  • how to "sell" your innovative ideas even to conservative management
About me
Marek graduated in Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering from the Faculty of Chemical Technology at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague and decided to pursue a doctoral degree at the Institute of Chemical Engineering in the Chobotix laboratory. He focused on the development of porous silica micro- and nanoparticles that can be used as carriers of active substances in pharmaceuticals. All of his scientific work for his doctorate was partly carried out at Zentiva, which allowed Marek to understand how a large company works and learn what is expected of people in certain positions, what their responsibilities are, etc. Throughout his studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Marek was involved in numerous extracurricular activities – he was a student senator and an active member of K3S.
During his fourth year of doctoral studies, Marek began actively looking for work abroad. Since he was quite selective, as he himself says, it took him 10 months to find a suitable position. He ultimately chose a position as a formulator in development at the pharmaceutical company Sandoz, which was formerly part of Novartis but became independent at the end of 2023. Specifically, he joined the development center in Kundl, Austria, which is less than a 5-hour drive from Prague. "Development in the pharmaceutical industry works a little differently than in an academic environment because you have pretty strict deadlines—you're pushed by a certain date when the patent expires, and if you're not on the market with the drug at that moment, you lose your position."
As a formulator, Marek worked on documentation, designed and conducted experiments, evaluated data, and performed risk analysis. In May 2022, he transferred within the development department to a new position in project management, where he is responsible for coordinating all people involved in the development project, and where he still works today. He is responsible for adhering to the project's time and financial plan, resolving crises, and negotiating with Sandoz's senior management. "My experience in the Senate of the University of Chemistry and Technology helps me a lot in negotiations. It is advantageous to be able to guess what someone really thinks or what they really need to hear." In recent months, Marek has also been involved in projects aimed at improving internal processes within Sandoz, putting his experience to good use in communicating with many colleagues from numerous branches of the company in different countries. Since Marek's working life takes place largely online, he can pass on his experience of how to collaborate effectively in an online environment, lead meetings, build meaningful working relationships, and set up a good home office regime. Marek approaches mentoring with the aim of passing on his experience and helping others.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • presentation skills and effective communication, critical thinking and analysis
  • orientation in the corporate environment, insight into the functioning of the pharmaceutical industry
  • stakeholder management, technical project management
  • horizontal people management - Matrix arrangement
  • "Right-track" decision-making, negotiation and advocacy skills, psychology of negotiation and motivation
About me

Honza graduated from the "Synthesis and Production of Medicines" program at the University of Chemistry and Technology (Bachelor's and Master's degrees). During his engineering studies, he actively sought cooperation with the corporate environment, which he achieved by writing his thesis in cooperation with Zentiva k.s. There, he had the opportunity to gain insight into the transfer (reformulation or transfer of products between individual production locations), development, and patent departments, as well as production.

During his PhD studies at the Chobotix laboratory, under the supervision of Prof. František Štěpánek, he had the opportunity to continue his collaboration with Zentiva. This time, he was part of the pre-formulation department, focusing on the development of analytical methods with a comprehensive pre-formulation strategy. At the same time, he participated in the current management of several projects with the aim of setting up and implementing the right pre-formulation and formulation strategy for new molecules/projects.

In 2021, he was successful in the selection process for Sandoz GmBH (Tyrol, Austria), for the position of Project Lead Scientist – Pharmaceutical Development, aka Formulator, where he still works today. The complexity of the work can be summed up with this analogy:

Management comes to you and says, "I want Ibuprofen in a heart-shaped tablet with the inscription 'WE LUV U' and a strength of XXX. The tablet must have a slightly red coating, be of comparable quality to the competition, and retain its status as a generic drug."

And my task is to fulfill it. In other words, to ensure and be responsible, in this order, for: pre-formulation (characteristics of the material and its behavior) -> laboratory development (proof of concept, a few kilograms) -> scale-up (laboratory, tens of kilograms) -> Technical batches (full-scale test production) -> Registration batches (final production) -> Submission of registration documentation ("Dossier") -> Support, preparation, and negotiation in the comment procedure ("Deficiency letter") -> Support during product launch.

All these steps must be constantly monitored, based on logical reasoning, properly communicated at all levels, and, above all, properly documented.

Honz's main strength as a mentor lies in his strong knowledge of technical project management in large companies and corporations. This means: how and when to make the right decision, how to organize and prioritize individual tasks, how to delegate work correctly, and how to collaborate with people in matrix management. Last but not least, it is necessary to communicate everything correctly to those around you, which is why it is important to know your communication and presentation style and how to use it correctly to your advantage.

  • insider view of building a company with legal implications
About me
While studying law, which he successfully completed, Štěpán already knew that he did not want to pursue this field in his professional life. However, the fact that he started a company in the food industry was more of a coincidence. Fourteen years ago, he was traveling around the world and tasted hummus for the first time while visiting Israel, and he was completely captivated by this food. When he returned home, he discovered that this delicacy was not available on the Czech market, which gave him the idea to start a business in this field. After a brief analysis, he decided that it would be best to start producing hummus and supplying it to stores. Since he knew nothing about food production, he locked himself in the library for three months and studied materials from the University of Chemistry and Technology. He learned about operations from friends who owned their own restaurants. In 12 years, he managed to build a company with a turnover of about 40 million a year, operating in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, and Germany.

"If I had known then what was in store for me, I wouldn't have gone into it. It was the so-called fool's trick, that sweet ignorance. You have your vision, but you can't think it through properly without relevant experience. Then difficult situations arise and those around you tell you that they don't have a solution because they already have their professional blindness, but they haven't even tried." In the beginning, Štěpán worked up to 12 hours a day, and because he had planned his start poorly financially, he found himself in a situation where he ate only hummus and bread for three months. Even though he hit rock bottom at the time, he fondly remembers this period. “I really love those moments when you go through a rough patch and at the end you reap the rewards and say to yourself, ‘I did it.’”

Štěpán now manages the company mainly financially and strategically. He thinks about where he wants the company to be in a year, in ten years. At the same time, he still enjoys presenting the company, showing people what they do and how they are doing. He is still learning how to work with people, motivate them, and supervise their work. For him, mentoring is mainly a process of learning and personal growth.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • gain insight into the corporate environment
  • discuss options for starting your career
  • advise on how to write a cover letter and resume
About me
Jaroslav's first important work experience was a part-time job at McDonald's. He would recommend trying this kind of work to anyone. For example, he learned that processes in a company can be developed to near perfection so that they are as fast, safe, and functional as possible. He graduated from the University of Chemistry and Technology and, as he himself says, he was not one of the best students, but the school gave him the important ability to think analytically, which he still uses in his work today. Jaroslav knew that he wanted to write his thesis in collaboration with industry, specifically in the business field. He collaborated with Neox, for which he designed a business continuity plan that the company still uses today.

After graduating, Jaroslav started working at Deloitte, first in the audit department, where he audited companies in various industries throughout the Czech Republic. After more than two years, he changed departments and spent the next three years doing due diligence on the purchase and sale of companies. This was followed by a period of change, both in his professional and personal life. After five months off, Jaroslav joined Johnson & Johnson, where he started again almost from scratch in the position of senior financial auditor. Beyond his position, he was involved in internal training at the company—he was trained in various areas so that he could become a lecturer and train other employees. For example, he has completed a design thinking workshop. Thanks to his activity, Jaroslav is currently starting a new position as Internal Audit Manager for the EMEA region.
And why does Jaroslav want to get involved in the mentoring program? "I've been very lucky in life, but at the same time, I've never been afraid to go after what I want. It's important not to be afraid to ask people for help, because they usually agree. Now I'd like to give something back to the world."

About me

My happiest day as a child was when my kindergarten teacher agreed to let me take a part of the class to our house and I could lend everyone toys and organize the whole thing so that everyone had fun. I organized building of sandcastles in the sandbox and negotiated the use of plastic trucks for construction purposes (instead of wasteful driving). Nothing much has changed. I like to build, bring people and resources together to create higher units that perform new, unexpected work, service or experiences.
I led clubs, work and hobby teams. I work best in a group of up to 10 people, but I also led Psy-High – my 4part, almost a week-long festival-baby in a flooded quarry – with 15 “officers” and 300 volunteers. I prefer to build things out of nothing. In various collectives I have built, among other things: student television, a university counselling centre, a new setup of the university's internal community, a concept of social networks, events, festivals, independent publishing houses – various vinyl’s, cassettes, etc., and last but not least a forest-bound wood crafted settlement and many beautiful places in nature (viewpoints, campsites, spaces, ...). I love photography, my heroes include war photojournalists such as Patrick Chauvel and others.
I have always done many things in parallel. I know what it’s like to be frustrated about not being an expert in anything but being able to do a little bit of everything - and I can assure you that it pays off in the end.
I like history and many other different fields, I enjoy expanding things into a broader/higher framework, I have sensitized myself over the years by looking for overlaps. I will be very happy to search for new perspectives with you, that will show banal things as interesting, complex things as graspable. We can find inspiration in unexpected sources for all dead-ends, from alchemy, through historical warlords to anthropology, technology, ...

About me

Matěj chose to study Biotechnology at the University of Chemistry and Technology. Over time, however, he discovered that what he enjoyed most about chemistry was numbers and that he needed "hard data" to best understand the context. That is why, while still a bachelor's student, he switched to the field of Drug Production and Synthesis and eventually settled on Analytical Chemistry, where, as he himself says, he finally found his calling.

After completing his master's degree, he sensed that the role of an analyst with a clearly defined task for which he would seek solutions in a relatively short time frame would suit him best in his working life. However, he decided to join a one-year trainee program at Contipro, where he tried out a number of positions in research and development. His first assignment was a project focused on the development of vaginal suppositories, and thanks to his work on it, he discovered that he also enjoyed more creative roles, where he could think strategically and plan individual development stages well in advance. After completing the trainee program, he focused on pharmacokinetics—testing drug forms and medical devices on in vitro and in vivo models. This work combines testing with advanced methods of analytical chemistry and mathematical modeling. For Matěj, it was the ideal combination of more creative development and working with data.

After two years in the workforce, Matěj decided to pursue a Ph.D. He was attracted by the possibility of later using the title in management positions and the opportunity to do a doctorate in a dynamic company environment. He also gained insight into how other workplaces operate, as he completed his Ph.D. studies at Palacký University in Olomouc and went on an internship in Vienna as part of his studies. In addition to new knowledge and a degree, his three-and-a-half-year studies also brought him further collaborations and new contacts thanks to good networking in the academic environment.

Matěj now works at Contipro as the head of a working group focused on pharmacokinetics. "I don't really wear a lab coat anymore. In addition to evaluating and planning pharmacokinetic experiments and developing new analytical methods, I lead long-term research aimed at clarifying how orally administered hyaluronan can work in the body and save our joints. It is a multidisciplinary topic that involves not only analysts, but also biologists and other specialists.” Matěj is now learning how to assign tasks within the team in a way that is appropriate to the interests and skills of each employee. He sees mentoring as an opportunity to establish contacts and collaborate with people who have a genuine interest in science and development.

About me
Honza took a roundabout route to studying at the University of Chemistry and Technology, even though chemistry had been with him since elementary school. He eventually chose crystal chemistry for his master's degree and then crystallography for his doctoral studies. While learning the "craft" of X-ray structural analysis at the University of Chemistry and Technology, he looked for techniques that could reveal the structure of a given substance in a form other than a perfect crystal. At that time, he received an offer to work after his doctorate in an NMR laboratory at one of the institutes of the Academy of Sciences. Since then, crystal structures have remained just a hobby, and for 20 years he has devoted himself fully to the analysis of organic substances using NMR spectroscopy. He gradually developed a taste for analyzing complex mixtures, such as reaction mixtures, extracts of natural substances, and biological matrices. Since 2023, he has been working again at the University of Chemistry and Technology, where he is trying to create a team that would focus on NMR metabolomics as a diagnostic method.

During his 20 years at the Academy of Sciences, he has held positions ranging from inexperienced postdoc, researcher, head of the scientific department, to deputy director. At the University of Chemistry and Technology, he supervised student work at all levels in the fields of organic chemistry, organic technology, and analytical chemistry. In 2016, he and his colleagues went through the ordeal of establishing a spin-off company in an academic environment. Their company, which focuses on the isolation of cannabinoids from cannabis, obtained a SÚKL certificate for the production of medicinal substances this year.

He became familiar with mentoring during his time as a visiting professor at Graz University of Technology in Austria. "I think it's right to share my experience with the next generation. A push in the right direction can save a lot of time, wasted effort, and, last but not least, disappointment."

What can I help my mentee with?
  • how to set your goals, preferences, and personal vision
  • learn to organize your time effectively
  • share different methods for finding out what you enjoy doing
About me

Lenka graduated from a Waldorf school, which has a specific approach to education, and through her studies she became interested in working with people. At the same time, she always wanted to be connected to nature and animals, so she decided to enroll at the University of Chemistry and Technology with the aim of understanding chemistry and the basic relationships in nature so that one day she could work for the good of both people and animals. During her studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Lenka was an active member of the IAESTE association. Thanks to her work in the association, she realized that she enjoyed leading a team, working in an international environment, and that she believed in education. She began to form her vision here—to create opportunities for people to learn.

As a graduate of a chemistry school, Lenka began working for a start-up and then for the American company CEA Prague, where she helped students who came to the Czech Republic find internships in the field and acted as a mentor. In 2019, she applied for and was hired as the director of the non-governmental non-profit organization INEX-SDA. INEX-SDA is involved in international volunteering and intercultural education. Lenka's work as director was divided into three main sections: the first was HR, i.e., employee care, followed by strategic management of the organization, and finally securing funding, which involved seeking grants and administering them. Lenka then founded a non-profit organization. She currently manages the finances of a neuroscience research project, where, given the novelty of the project, she devises and designs most of the systems herself.

For Lenka, inspiration is the greatest value that guides her in life. "I think mentoring is all about letting yourself be inspired. I admire when people have the will to develop themselves; I think it's very important. And when a person is willing to draw on the experience and knowledge of someone else, they can be inspired."

What can I help my mentee with?
  • insight into the chemical business
  • detailed insight into the complex process of chemical distribution, including various positions
  • insight into the functioning of a multinational corporation
  • insight into various career opportunities
  • facilitation of contacts
About me

Viktor started out as a salesman in an analytical laboratory, where his daily routine consisted of calling customers from a list and seeking orders. He gradually worked his way up to become the company's director. After eight years, he decided it was time for a change and left to join Tesla Hloubětín, where he spent a year managing an independent water treatment plant. This was followed by a move outside the field—he spent three years at a container manufacturing company—but eventually returned to chemistry. He realized that he wanted to stay in the field: "People have a tendency to belittle what they learned in school. Often, you don't remember a lot of things, but somewhere in the back of your mind, the connections are there. You know the environment, you meet people you had at school, and somehow it all fits together." Through his position as a distributor of laboratory chemicals, he joined Synthesia, where he worked as a production plant manager, and eventually Brenntag, where he still works as an executive.

He sees nothing wrong with changing jobs or even venturing outside his field. People shouldn't be afraid of change; if something about their current position or company doesn't suit them, they should explore other options and discover their potential. On the other hand, he points out that it's good to be able to describe the reasons for these changes, which someone might read about in your CV, and turn them to your advantage.

He likes his current position because every day brings new challenges and knowledge. He says that he is not a "great scientist" and does not want to know every detail of a single field. On the contrary, he likes to have a horizontal overview of many things and connect them, finding connections. At Brenntag, he combines chemistry, technology, and business. In addition, he also deals with personnel and administrative matters.

He sees mentoring as an opportunity to further promote chemistry, even among people who are already studying it. "Students should know that chemistry is not just laboratory work and scientific activity. It is also business or manufacturing; in short, it can be applied in all areas of human activity." Viktor is a member of the board of the Chemical Industry Association and vice president of the Chemical Traders Association, and he sees the promotion of chemistry as his duty. He is happy to support people with a genuine interest and, in return, learn something about the current generation of students and young employees—what their priorities and expectations are, which he sees as important input for the further development of the field and job positions.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • having an overview of what you are doing and how to get everything done
  • finding the direction in which to move forward
About me

Martin got into his current job through photography and graphic design. He was interested in how images are created, what happens in the background, and how we can manipulate them on a computer. He studied computer science at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, and today he works in signal and image processing, mainly in the field of medicine. For example, he is currently developing software for hospitals to evaluate CT data, which will enable the estimation of the percentage of lung involvement by coronavirus. At the same time, he also works at the open access microscopy workplace at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, and at the NTK, where he helps with the introduction of Open Science in Czech science. Through his position at the NTK, he can constantly learn new trends in data management and pass them on, including in his teaching activities at the University of Chemistry and Technology.

After starting college, Martin felt that many things were missing, so he began to get involved wherever he could to help get things moving. He rose to the position of student president of the academic senate and joined several student associations. "I got used to having some kind of fulfillment, and all those extra activities also gave me the space to find out what I enjoy and what I'm good at. At some point, you get to a point where you're doing a lot of things and enjoying them, and you want to start getting paid for them. Then you have to force yourself to find out what makes you different from others and who might pay you for it." As a mentor, Martin would like to help students learn to take a broader view of the field they are involved in. He can advise them on which areas outside their study program to focus on. Moreover, he himself missed a similar program when he was studying at the University of Chemistry and Technology.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • Find out if I want to pursue a PhD and if science is for me
  • Provide advice on how to find an internship abroad and help them make it happen
  • Find a work-lab-life balance
About me

During her first four years at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Terezie focused solely on her studies. She graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree. But what good did that do her? All she had was a nice photo from her graduation. During her master's studies, she decided that university was not just about exams and began to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the school. She participated in the ATHENS program and went to Serbia for a two-month IAESTE internship. Immediately afterwards, she went to Hamburg for 11 months, where she worked on her thesis in Dr. Willmans' group at EMBL. There she realized that science is great and she wants to pursue a doctorate. After six months of searching, she found Dr. Jiráček's laboratory at UOCHB, where she successfully completed her doctorate after 4.5 years.

During her PhD, she realized that it is necessary not only to do science, but also to popularize it. That is why she became involved in mentoring high school students in a club at the University of Chemistry and Technology and mentoring high school students in the laboratory at her workplace. She also began to actively participate in popularization events organized by UOCHB. The highlight of pushing her personal boundaries was her participation in the FameLab 2022 competition. She did not lose her nervousness in front of the audience, but the audience did not seem to notice when they awarded her the Audience Award.

She worked as a postdoc in Zuzana Kečkéšová's group at UOCHB. In addition to popularizing science, Terezie found another passion in organizing events such as lab retreats and workshops on non-academic job opportunities. She is currently actively involved in organizing monthly career lectures for postdocs. She is currently a postdoc at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, where she is involved in malaria research and drug discovery activities.

If you want to chat with her about something other than science, you can't go wrong with history, climbing, and animal videos.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • Contact with industry, applying knowledge from school in practice
  • Chemical engineering and its applications
  • Collaboration on case studies
  • Applying research results in practice
  • Consulting in industrial chemistry
About me
During his bachelor's studies in the general Chemistry program at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Martin decided to focus his career on application rather than science, although research and development remained his primary focus. During his studies, he participated in projects for industrial companies, which was also the subject of both of his final theses defended at the Faculty of Chemical Technology. After completing his master's degree and an internship in Ecuador, he joined the Řež Research Center as an R&D worker, where he was involved in scientific and research support for conventional and nuclear power plants in the field of chemistry in the form of grant and commercial projects. After six years, he moved from the research sphere to the implementation team, where he was attracted by the potential commercialization of scientific results and their practical application.
In his current position at NUM Solution, he is responsible for business development and project management in the field of chemistry and pharmaceuticals. This position involves coordinating the entire project life cycle, from identifying technological challenges and potential clients, to designing solutions and communicating practical requirements to programmers working on mathematical simulations, to the finished product and interpreting the results back to the client. In his position, Martin works closely with the company's management and assists in the strategic development of the company in the field of chemistry and pharmaceuticals. He is responsible for both short-term consulting contracts and long-term projects based on close cooperation with the client's team.
By participating in the mentoring program, Martin would like to maintain contact with the school as an institution and its students, in whom he sees great potential. He sees the opportunity to collaborate as a way to give back to a place that has given him so much. "I would also like to support my mentee in what I missed at school—contact with industry, seeing the possibilities of research applications. To free yourself from what the school sets as goals, what the value system is there. I perceived teaching as a kind of competition, but it's not always the same as in real life."

About me
Alena studied drug synthesis and manufacturing at the University of Chemistry and Technology, and while still a student, she collaborated with Teva Pharmaceuticals, where she started working after graduation. During her first year, she held several positions in manufacturing, gained an overview of the company, and settled into the position of transfer technologist. After three years of intensive work, during which she handled increasingly difficult projects, she faced burnout. As part of a necessary lifestyle change, she moved to Otava for the summer, where she opened her own water bar and built a system of returnable cups along the entire river. She started the business, communicated with the health authorities, the Vltava River Basin Authority, the tax office, and other institutions, and also acted as an operations manager, hiring temporary workers, etc. "I completely switched gears. I think it's good that people need to take a break sometimes to figure out what they're missing. And after a while, I started to miss pharmacy.“ However, thanks to her new experience, she realized that she enjoyed project management and took a position as a project manager at a consulting firm that deals with drug registrations. Alena currently works at Novartis, where she is responsible for supporting production in the implementation of changes in technological processes so that new procedures can be validated.
On top of all this, Alena started an MBA in Management Soft Skills at the beginning of the pandemic. "I live in constant change, and that gives me the important ability to adapt. There are many things we cannot influence. Sometimes you work on something for three months, and then suddenly someone higher up wants something completely different. That's just the way it is, but you have to take it in stride." Alena sees mentoring as an opportunity to support each other through contact with other people who are similarly minded. According to her, students should be aware that they want to do something extra and be open.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • self-development (personal vision, growth mindset, habit building)
  • leadership
  • lean six sigma projects
  • malting, brewing, food production - systems
About me
Milan graduated from the Institute of Fermentation Chemistry and Bioengineering (today the Institute of Biotechnology) under the supervision of Prof. Brányk. During his doctoral studies, during which he focused on the topic of microbial anaerobic contaminants of beer, Milan had many activities beyond his scientific work. He rose to the position of vice-chairman in the academic senate, and through this position, he and a group of friends worked to restore the tradition of Kachekran as we know it today. “We were always joking around. During our candidacy, we put up banners around school with photos of people we needed to go to the senate to gain support for Kachekran.” In addition to his scientific work, he also took on the responsibility of taking care of the team spirit of the laboratory. These activities fundamentally shaped him, and thanks to them he learned how to work with people, which he always enjoyed. “I always wanted the people around me to be happy, and I liked to make them happy. You can approach people management in a positive way, you don’t have to be just a tough boss, but you have to ask your colleagues what they need and get to know them personally and understand their motivation – that’s my vision.”

After completing his doctorate in 2015, Milan took on the position of technologist at the Pivovary Lobkowicz Group, which at the time operated seven breweries. During the three years Milan worked there, dealing with various technological issues in all seven breweries, gaining a lot of experience and insight into beer production. This was followed by a short experience as a brewer at Pivovar Kácov, during which he was offered the position of malthouse manager at Plzeňský Prazdroj, where he has been working for almost 4 years now. Milan leads a team of eighteen, but is responsible for coordinating around 45 people, from technologists to maintenance and sanitation employees. The malthouse produces 88 thousand tons of malt annually, which is enough for about five and a half million hectoliters of beer, which is about a quarter of Czech beer production. Milan is responsible for ensuring the quality of production, the operation and management of people.
“I am learning to be more of a leader than a manager, I try to be in contact with my people daily so that I know what they are doing. We also try to find out what the team does/does not like and what motivates them, based on joint brainstorming, and thus build a team vision.” Milan is involved in mentoring with the motivation to move forward and grow. At the same time, he mentions that he himself has two important mentors in his life who have helped him – Prof. Brányk - director of VUPS and former director of production at Pivovary Lobkowicz, Ing., Jiří Famera.

What can I help my mentee with?
  • planning academic and non-academic careers
  • studying, working, and living abroad
  • communication and presentation skills
  • balancing personal and professional life
About me
Eva focuses on theoretical chemistry at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, and has been leading her own group since 2024. She also works as a university lecturer, mainly teaching courses focused on quantum chemistry, spectroscopy, and chemical kinetics.
She studied chemistry at the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague, and then focused on theory and molecular modeling in her further studies. During her master's and doctoral studies, she moved from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences to the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, without changing her research group. She welcomed the move to another workplace with gratitude, as she believes that staying in one place for too long does not bring anything good. She obtained her doctorate in 2007, defending her thesis while expecting her first child.
Instead of a postdoctoral stay, she took two maternity leaves, followed by a short engagement at Charles University. Her path to science was then long and winding, involving managerial work on projects and grants. She left for her postdoctoral stay unusually late, at around the age of 40, taking her whole family with her to the University of Pisa. The stay was beneficial both scientifically and culturally and launched her career at the University of Chemistry and Technology.
Today, she mainly focuses on simulations of ultrafast processes induced by X-ray radiation and collaborates with experimenters who mainly measure on large devices such as synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. In her private life, she enjoys sports and theater.
As a mentor, she would like to share her experiences, especially in the area of non-traditional career paths, and support mentees in their decisions. She herself will be happy to gain new ideas from interactions with mentees.

  • multidisciplinary use of knowledge and further education
  • opportunities for foreign internships, conferences, etc.
About me
Chemistry interested Marek already in high school – he participated in Olympics and stays in Běstvina, where he met his future classmates and a community of like-minded people. At the University of Chemistry and Technology he enrolled in the Chemistry department, where he gradually became interested in its practical application and the combination of theory and application, and so he got to membrane separations in physical chemistry. He remained on the topic of membranes from his bachelor's thesis through his master's degree and doctorate, during which he also completed two research internships - at FUJIFILM in the Netherlands, where he studied thin films based on silicone, and in Calabria, Italy, where he worked at the Institute of Membrane Technologies (ITM-CNR).
“So far, my entire career has been guided by the method: accept the challenge you like.”
Marek currently works at AOP Orphan Pharmaceuticals in Vienna in the department of preclinical development of drugs for rare diseases. “We follow the motto that science is done with the head, which is why we do not work in the laboratory, but prepare, supervise and evaluate in vitro and in vivo tests at external workplaces”. An important component of his work is also the analysis of preclinical data of potential acquisitions for business development, from the perspective of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotoxicology. Marek holds the role of AI Ambassador and supports the R&D department in the areas of digitalization, statistics and analysis. Marek moved to Vienna after completing his doctorate and moved through a number of positions, including the head of the research team for the development of a system for extracorporeal circulation for the purpose of removing CO2 from the blood in a start-up environment. He subsequently worked as a consultant in the field of medical devices and for a short time also in a start-up as a Business development analyst for the area of machine learning in analytical chemistry. The latest change was the transfer to his current position in a corporate environment, albeit still a relatively small Austrian pharmaceutical company.
During his studies, Marek participated in many popularization projects (Modern Chemistry Lessons, Science at Sychrov Castle, etc.) and was the chairman of the student part of the academic senate. “In the senate, I learned not to insist on everything being my way at all costs, but rather to delegate work to people I trust. Of course, this also puts you in situations where you have to decide on things you don’t understand and take responsibility when needed.” Marek sees mentoring as an opportunity to be in contact with students and pass on to them what he has learned outside of the field of study and what they can use in the future.

Doktorské studium absolvovala na švýcarském výzkumném EMPA institutu, vyvíjela během něj novou metodu isotopické analýzy oxidu dusného laserovou spektroskopií a její aplikace.

  • hledání vlastní kariérní i životní cesty
  • předání zkušeností s vedením studentské organizace
  • zkušenost se změnou oboru
O mně
Helena vždycky měla ráda nové výzvy a dělala si věci “po svém”. Tenhle životní přístup jí často stavěl do role, kdy trochu vybočovala a hledala si vlastní cestu, ať už se to týkalo studia medicíny, chemie nebo třeba kurzu keramiky. Navigovat tuhle vlastnost byla v rámci VŠCHT obrovská výzva. Klíčová změna přišla, když se v průběhu studia přidala do studentské organizace IAESTE. V rámci IAESTE se starala o komunikaci s partnery a vztahy se školou a jeden rok neziskovku vedla. Práce s lidmi a rozmanitost agendy jí ukázaly, že neexistuje jedna konkrétní věc, kterou když bude dělat, bude její život naplněný.

To oni jí poskytovali inspiraci, dávali zpětnou vazbu a pomohli mi identifikovat kam chce jít a v podporovali jí v tom.

  • nastavit strategii a business-model
  • efektivně řídit procesy a projekty
Ze studentské iniciativy vyrostla během několika let jedna z nejvýraznějších produkcí v republice pořádající festivaly Mladí ladí jazz, Festival svobody, Praha Žije Hudbou, Student fest a další akce. Nadšení pro podnikání a kreativitu vedlo Honzu k dalším projektům.

Vedle toho pomáhá malým i velkým firmám s marketingem, projektovým a procesním řízením i business analytikou a strategií.

„Když někde vidím potenciál, nemůžu si pomoct a snažím se ho z lidí a z firem vymáčknout,“ vysvětluje Honza proč mimo jiné přijal pozvání do mentoringového programu

  • work-life balance a skloubení času na práci i rodinu
O mně
Petra absolvovala obor biochemické inženýrství na Fakultě potravinářské a biochemické technologie na Vysoké škole chemicko-technologické v Praze, kde v roce 2004 obhájila doktorát. V roce 2013 zde pak získala docenturu v oboru biochemie.

Do mentoringu vstupuje s motivací “pomáhat studentům, především doktorandům a postdokům dosáhnout rychleji jejich cílů, aniž by ztratili svoji duši a vztahy”.

  • poskytnout náhled do různých pracovních prostředí – akademická vs. soukromá sféra
  • poskytnout náhled do fungování chemického průmyslu
  • nastínit, jak vypadá práce technologa
  • hledání kreativních řešení
  • time-management

Vedle rutinního hlídání technologických parametrů, kvality produktu a spotřeb surovin a energií nastávají na výrobních provozech skoro denně situace, jejichž rozklíčování a nalezení příčin vyžaduje až detektivní přístup.”

Zároveň rád někomu pomůže sdílením svých zkušeností z jednotlivých etap studia a z poměrně rozličných pracovních prostředí.

S čím mohu svému mentee pomoci?
  • Pochopit rozdíly mezi studentským a pracovním životem
  • Pohony letadel, aerodynamika
  • Psaní závěrečných a odborných prací

  •  vhled do fungování státní správy
  • grantová agenda a její proces

Skrze mentoring by Lucie především ráda pomohla začínajícím vědcům a vědkyním s jejich kariérní drahou, například prostřednictvím zapojení do mezinárodních projektů v rámcovém programu EU.

  • work-life balance

  • přechod z role specialisty do role vedoucího týmu
  • obchod a marketing
  • projektové řízení
  • vedení týmu
  • leadership
Proto k dalšímu studiu zvolil ekonomicky zaměřený obor a během studia nastoupil do marketingového oddělení velké chemické firmy Linde. To mu dalo hlavně náhled do fungování velkého mezinárodního korporátu.

  • mohu zprostředkovat návštěvu v naší výrobě i kancelářích a dát ochutnat běžný pracovní den bez příkras
Právě v takové společnosti, kde se setkávají různé expertízy i životní zkušenosti, lze díky této pestrosti schopností uvádět do pohybu velké a odvážné projekty.

I přes úspěšnou kariéru v HR oblasti Michal nezapomíná na svou zálibu v IT.
