Expectation vs Reality of the Career Counselling service
Do you expect that... | It is more like this: |
... the counsellor will tell you exactly what to do with your life? | Click here to discover the reality! The career counsellor can mainly help you to sort out your thoughts, give you direction and help you in your personal development; she can also share with you her experience, her point of view on your situation or tell you what she would do if she were in your position. However, your life is yours to plan and it is up to you to decide what to do exactly. |
... the counsellor will tell you where to look for and get a part-time or permanent job? | Click here to discover the reality! The career counsellor is not an expert in all the departments at the UCT and does not know all the companies that might employ you - so she will not tell you which companies are waiting for you with open arms. However, she can advise you on where to look, how to proceed in your search, what type of job/position might be suitable for you, or how to impress during the interviews. |
... you will attend the counselling meeting once, everything will be clear and your future will be brigt and full of unicorns? | Click here to discover the reality! In order to take full advantage of the free career counselling service provided by the univeristy, it is the best and most meaningful to schedule the counselling meeting repeatedly (not just once, before the end of your studies) to discuss your progress, changes, current issues (for some this means a month apart, for others six months). At the same time, the counselor will already know you a bit and you will get more in depth on certain topics. But even with repeated meetings, she won't lead you by the hand; the bulk of the work, and especially the desire to work on yourself, is up to you. |
... the counsellor will change you? |
Click here to discover the reality! The counsellor can help you to know and understand yourself, give you tips for working with your strengths and weaknesses. But don't expect that just by meeting with her you can fundamentally change and that you will come out of the meeting as a completely new person whose life will go exactly as planned... after all, it is still life, and it is unpredictable, full of changes, obstacles, but also opportunities. |
... the counsellor will give you a template CV and cover letter, you just do a little editing and send it out? | Click here to discover the reality! You can use the Career Consultation to get tips on how to improve your CV or cover letter, but don't expect any proven templates or to start creating these documents during the actual meeting - it's much better to prepare the first versions yourself and then edit and fine-tune them with the help of the counsellor. |
