Václav's first career experience was working for a big event company, which he got thanks to a Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert he attended. It was a crucial experience for him - he learned that one can organize the work of a team to almost perfection and that he was comfortable seeing results immediately after the work was done. Václav studied Environmental Chemistry and Fuels Technology, and he has been interested in energetics since he was a kid. During his studies he went to study in Sweden within the Erasmus Program. "There I realised how great it is to work in a team where everyone has a role. I realised that everyone didn't have to know everything, but it is important to bring people with different skills together in a way that complements each other synergistically. What I learned about myself was that I didn't have to be the smartest person in the group, but I was able to get things across to others in a way that was understandable, so I ended up presenting most of the projects we worked on."
As part of his master's thesis, he worked with CV Řež and the company ČEZ, and eventually, by chance, got a job as a material engineer in the Czech National Bank. During his studies, he was involved in popularising chemistry, and after graduation, he also worked in this field professionally. He became the coordinator of the educational programme at Horizon Educational for the Czech Republic. As part of the programme, teams of high school students build their own hydrogen-powered cars, which they then race against each other. "I am a teacher, then a manager and sometimes a business developer when we are looking for new partners to work with. But most of all, the teacher role fulfills me. It's great to see younger students enjoying the race. However the fun doesn't come for free: first you have to put something together, it usually doesn't work, so you have to keep working on it and stay focused. As a result, you drive a car, and you completely miss the fact that you actually learned basic electrical engineering, programming or 3D printing within the process." The project started in the Czech Republic and the USA, and thanks to Václav, the idea was spread to 13 countries around the world in four years with the help of about 500 teams and 3,000 students. Václav's role was, among other things, to travel abroad and pass on the know-how to local teams and help them get the project off the ground.
Another important professional experience is his two years at ORLEN UniCRE as a project manager for hydrogen technology development. His role here was basically the same - to be the initiator and driving force for a completely new sector. "I was a bit of a manager and a bit of a researcher, going between the stacks in my uniform and then back to management meetings. I learned a lot, my head was totally occupied because I had to think about problems in detail and that was great."
He wants to become a mentor because he enjoys working with people and sees it as an opportunity to learn from each other.
