MARTIN SCHÄTZ

Role
: Assistant Professor, EU Open Science Coordinator

Area: Biological and Medical Image Analysis, Informatics, Data Analysis

Employer: UCT Prague, Faculty of Science at Charles University, National Library of Technology

What can I help my mentee with?

  • have an overview of what one is dealing with and how to get it all done
  • find direction

Martin came to his current job through photography and graphic design. He was interested in how images are created, what happens in the background of them and how it is possible that we can manipulate them on the computer. He studied computer science at UCT Prague, and nowadays he works with signal and image processing mainly in the medical field. For example, he is currently developing software for hospitals to evaluate CT data to estimate the percentage of lungs affected by coronavirus. He is also working at the open access microscopy department of the Faculty of Science of the Charles University and at the National Library of Technology where he is helping to introduce Open Science in Czech science. Through his position there and in his teaching activities at UCT Prague, he is able to continuously learn new trends in data management and pass them on.

After joining the university, Martin felt he was missing a lot of things here, so he started getting involved where he could to help get things moving. He worked his way up to the position of Student President of the Academic Senate and several student associations. "I got used to having an outlet, and also all the extra activities gave me a place to find out what I enjoy and what I'm good at. At some point you get to a point where you do a lot and enjoy it and you would like to start getting some money for it. Then you have to force yourself to figure out what makes you different from other people and who could pay you for those skills." As a mentor, Martin would like to help students learn to have a perspective on the field they are involved in. He can advise on what areas outside of the curriculum to focus on. In addition, he himself lacked a similar program while studying at UCT Prague.
